eSIM or roaming: which is better for your trip?
The honest comparison: when a travel eSIM is cheaper and when your German plan with roaming is enough.
For trips outside the EU, an eSIM is almost always cheaper and more flexible than roaming: you only pay for your data package, you know the price in advance and you are online straight away. Within the EU, your German plan is often enough thanks to EU roaming, but watch the included data allowance and possible throttling.
“eSIM or roaming?” is the most common question before a trip. The short answer: it depends on your destination. Within the EU, “Roam like at home” applies, so you can use your German data allowance at no extra charge, although it is often throttled or capped. Outside the EU, for example in Turkey, the USA, Thailand or Switzerland, roaming through your German provider quickly becomes very expensive (sometimes several euros per megabyte). Here, a local travel eSIM is the far cheaper and more predictable solution.
eSIM vs. roaming compared
| Travel eSIM | Roaming (EU) | Roaming (outside the EU) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Fixed package price | Included in your plan | Very expensive (per MB/day) |
| Activation | QR code, instant | Automatic | Automatic |
| Cost control | Price known in advance | Good | Poor: bill shock possible |
| Data allowance | Freely selectable | Often capped/throttled | Usually expensive to top up |
| German number | Stays active (in parallel) | Stays active | Stays active |
| Recommendation | Ideal outside the EU | Short trips in the EU | Hardly recommended |
When is each worthwhile?
A travel eSIM is better if …
… you are travelling outside the EU (Turkey, USA, Asia, Switzerland), need a lot of data or want to know the cost in advance. For round trips through several countries, a regional eSIM is usually the cheapest choice too.
Roaming is enough if …
… you are only away briefly within the EU and your plan includes enough data. Check your included EU data allowance before you travel: with many plans it is lower than at home.
